It’s Not The End Of The World!

So the NBA has done the inevitable and announced that they will be allowing ads on jerseys for the 2013-2015 season. For those who have, or will, say it, it’s true. It’s not the end of the world.

There is really only one thing that is the end of the world and that’s, well, the end of the world. And since, at the time I write this, it hasn’t happened yet, I can conclusively say that it is not, in fact the end of the world. Thank goodness.

It’s not even the end of basketball. It wasn’t the end of basketball when Spencer Haywood sued the NBA to allow underclassmen to play in the NBA.

It wasn’t the end of basketball when the Atlanta Hawks offered their reserve center, Jon Koncak, an unprecedented 6 year, $13 million contract- more than Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were all making at the time.

It wasn’t the end of basketball when Kevin Garnett started the trend of high schoolers entering the draft (he certainly wasn’t the first, not by a longshot, but until he entered the draft it was a rarity).

It wasn’t the end of basketball when LeBron James made “The Decision” to join forces with Dwyane Wade in Miami.

So this obviously isn’t the end of basketball.

It doesn’t mean it’s a good thing, though.

The problem is that it isn’t the end of the world. It’s just yet another piece chipped away, slow enough that most people don’t notice. In fact 20 years from now, people will probably laugh at the hand-wringing many of us did about ads on jerseys. Then they’ll push their kids out the door so they can get to Google Elementary School in time for corporate citizenship class.

That would make a great cartoon!

I wonder if teams get a pick of what goes on their jerseys, how the revenue from that is split, or if the ads will all be the same league-wide.

Maybe when their jersey revenue drops like a brick they will stop this nonsense.
