Prediction #2

Okay, I’m a little late today.  Well, for those in the East, anyway.  Here, I just woke up, so give me some leeway here.

THE RAPTORS WILL STRUGGLE OUT OF THE GATE, BUT PUT THINGS TOGETHER BY CHRISTMAS

ChemistryIt’s an entirely new team. Does anyone really think they’ll click right away? Especially with Bosh and Turkoglu missing time early? The same thing happened three years ago when Colangelo redid the roster. They struggled in November, going 7-13, but people seem to forget that since they finished so well. Basketball, possibly more than any other sport, requires chemistry on the court, and chemistry takes time to build. That’s why newly built teams so rarely win right away. Boston winning a Championship the same year as getting Garnett and Ray Allen was an anomaly. Normally, a team must learn how to play together, not only in the regular season, but the playoffs, as well. They must take their lumps in the playoffs, learn from their failures and come back harder the next season.

Of course, with this prediction that the Raptors will struggle early comes the natural prediction that Raptor fans will panic. I predict that they’ll be calling the signing of Turkoglu a mistake. They’ll be calling for Jack to start in place of a Calderon, who will be in the top 5 in assists, assist to turnover ratio and free throw percentage, and actually playing well, but fans won’t care. Of course, they’ll also be talking about how Bosh will leave when he becomes a free agent and that Colangelo should trade him while he has a chance.

In December, they’ll go 9-6 and people will start forgetting the start, but still talk about trading Bosh. January will see them go 9-6 again, and fans will start talking about trying to get a top seed in the playoffs. Really, it’s all or nothing with Raptor fans.

As the game against Boston showed, the Raptors will indeed struggle. Most of the Boston players have been playing together for at least a couple of seasons, and it showed against a Raptor team still trying to fit together. This game certainly reiterated that it will take time and that Raptor fans need to be patient.
